Libbey Glass Is Mostly A Title Having A Lengthy Past

The Libbey glass Company has a reputation that stretches back hundreds of years. The original firm was set up in the town of East Cambridge at the start of the nineteenth century, at this time they were known as the New England Glass Company. This name was altered to the New England Glass works when bought out by William Libbey in 1878. As competition in the manufacturing industry was rapidly growing on the east coast, it was decided to relocate the business to the sate of Ohio. Ohio contained rich sand deposits and gas reserves.

Ohio also offered better logistics in the form of an extensive network of railroads and steamship lines. It was not until 1892 that the company was given the name still in use today. Now it is a prestigious brand and one that is in high demand across the US and internationally for items such as water pitchers.

The company has developed a reputation as being great innovators. If we were to study developments in the glassware industry, we would discover that it was designers working for the firm who helped to develop new ideas and trends. An example of which is Joseph Locke who joined the firm at the end of the nineteenth century and helped to revolutionize the production line.

It was Locke who was responsible for creating a number of new types of designs. This included such styles as Maize, Amberina, Peach Blow, and Pomonma. These designs were hand crafted and often used expensive materials. For example, Amberian has a reddish-amber hue due to an infusion of gold.

Fast forward to today and we see that their name is still well known for producing the most enigmatic and unique designs. They also manufacture containers, bottles, windows, and a diverse range of interesting drinks vessels. The mass production of consumer glass items actually started nearly one hundred years ago. It was thanks to the inventor Michael Owen that a machine was made which could automatically create a range of new products.

Automation brought in a period of greater profitability for the company as manufacturing and personnel costs could be reduced while production was increased. The firm holds the claim of being the first ever glass manufacturer to use a heat treated process that created glassware that could be used commercially. In fact, they have been involved in a number of important manufacturing developments, not just in home consumer products but also in a variety of other industries.

As the sales of automobiles increased during the first half of the twentieth century, so did the demand for strong windshields. The Libbey Company became the foremost producer of windshields in the US. It was because of them that Ohio developed a repuation as an important manufacturing area.

The Libby glass company has continued to grow and diversify over the decades. In recent times, they have taken over other firms that produce kitchen and dining products, such as water pitchers. Their portfolio today is extensive and broad and produces the most attractive range of glassware suitable for all kinds of homes. If you want quality products, Libbey glass is a great firm to check out.
