Career As A Criminal Lawyer $15 Criminal lawyers also called attorneys are called upon when the going gets toughest. The most obvious example of a criminal lawyer is the criminal defense attorney made famous by decades of movies, television and crime novels. In the United States, people charged with crimes are guaranteed access to a lawyer by the Constitution. Sometimes they are public defenders, lawyers on the public payroll who have to be ready to defend anybody who needs their services. Other times they are employed by private firms or are solo practitioners and are paid directly by their clients. Criminal prosecutors are always on the public payroll. Their client is the state they work in, and they represent their client’s interest just like other lawyers represent their clients. Criminal attorneys are at the leading edge of the American criminal justice system, which can be a source of great pride as well as unending intellectual stimulation. And it’s no secret that they enjoy excellent earnings. On the other hand, criminal defense attorneys often have to represent people they find reprehensible. And prosecutors are required to aggressively go after people who they may feel don’t really deserve it. |

The Process and Politics of Defense Acquisition $105 The United States government invests billions each year on equipping armed forces with the most advanced military equipment. The root of the American defense acquisition system is driven by a combination of national interests and domestic political requirements. While fundamentally the defense acquisition system has produced results for the United States military, improvements are needed in order to continue to move forward in advancing military tactics and technology. Exploring both the systemic and political levels of the system, Sorenson argues that the United States will fall behind if the current defense acquisition system is not reformed. This book brings together elements of this complicated system, such as national security requirements, and the changes that are needed in both the structural and political pillars. A combination of political interests and the needs of the military, serviced by an ever-shrinking defense industry, make a genuine acquisition reform even more difficult, resulting in reform that is more symbolic than genuine. The United States military spends hundreds of billions of dollars each year on defense weapons and other items to equip the growing military. These weapons come from a system that is deeply imbedded in complicated and extensively regulated procedures, controlled by a few political actors, along with international arms customers. Since the Cold War, the defense industry has shrunk significantly in production, while increasing a few powerful giant firms that now dominate the defense business. Economic structure of the system and political forces are significant tin reform efforts, creating an inefficient system. No other book explores both the process and political dynamics of the defense acquisition system. Sorenson brings together the primary elements of the defense acquisition process, including the evolution and current structure, along with the political system and actors that influence it. Through analyzing the defense contractors that help supply the industry and the growing international arms markets that now play a significant role, he explains the role that both national interest and domestic political requirements play. Consequences of the system range from criminal activity to much more common problems of inefficiency and ineffectiveness. Sorenson argues that efforts to improve the defense acquisition system are necessary in determining the future outcome of the system. |

Defense in International Criminal Proceedings $182 Without question, international criminal law (ICL) has become a legal growth industry. Regional supranational systems, such as the European Union, are beginning to prepare a genuine supranational criminal law that may supersede the national jurisdictions. These efforts are still in their infancy, but along with the creation of the prosecutorial framework and measures like e.g. the European Arrest Warrant, EUROPOL or EUROJUST, the defence lawyers are preparing themselves for the new challenge. It is thus useful and necessary to cover these developments from the get go. This collection of cases and materials attempts for the first time to provide a compendium of the most important legal texts, relevant documents and cases, as well as explanatory commentary on the law of defence in international criminal proceedings by scholars and practitioners who have a wealth of relevant experience in the field. The book provides students in law school courses on international human rights law and ICL with the essential materials to understand the vital importance of an adequate defence in international criminal proceedings. Further, the text gives legal practitioners who may consider extending their field of practice to the international level a look at the diversity of the tasks they will encounter and prepare them for the legal culture shock inevitable at the international tribunals and courts. This book is available for classroom adoption. |

Pursuing An Accident Claim Through A Previously Unavailable Channel
In most cases where a person has sustained an injury due to an accident that was not their fault they will know exactly where to seek compensation from. Claims that involve trips in public places or car crashes tend to be pretty straight forward. Yet sometime accidents will occur where it will be unclear to the victim as to who they should seek compensation from.On occasion though a incident will occur where things are less clear and the victim will be unclear as to where they can seek compensation. In some of these cases it may well be that the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) is the right place to pursue an accident claim.
The history of CICA
CICA, which was set up in 1964, is a non-departmental body that deals with claims from those that have received injuries as a result of violent crime. The Authority, along with its predecessor the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, has already paid out upwards of 3 billion, making it one of the most generous of its kind in the world.
CICA and accidental injuries
Until recently CICA had never made a compensation payment for injuries sustained in what was considered and accident. In 2007 this changed when a motorcyclist collided with a pedestrian who later died from his injuries. The young boy of 12 was playing chicken on a dual carriageway with several of his friend and tried to run in front of a van, failing to spot the motorcyclist who was overtaking. Even though the motorcyclist was only travelling at 50mph in what was a 70mph zone, he still had no chance of avoiding the youth and was not to blame in any way.
Injuries to the motorcyclist
Not only was a young life tragically ended, but the motorcyclist also suffered serious injury that kept him from working for 3 months. His lawyers successfully argued that by running out into the road whilst playing chicken the boy committed a violent act.
So if you have been victim of an accident in similar circumstances and are unsure of where to seek compensation, it may be that you have the option of pursuing an accident claim with CICA.
